The Philippines has a sophisticated cellular phone industry and a high concentration of users.[182] As of 2008, there are about 67.9 million cellular phone subscribers in the Philippines.[183] Text messaging is a popular form of communication, and in 2007, the nation sent an average of one billion SMS messages per day.[184] Over five million mobile phone users also use their phones as virtual wallets, making it a leader among developing nations in providing financial transactions over cellular networks.[185]
The Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company commonly known as PLDT is the leading telecommunications provider. It is also the largest company in the country.[182][186] Its wholly owned subsidiaries Smart Communications and Piltel, along with Globe Telecom of the Ayala Group, BayanTel, and Sun Cellular are the major cellular service providers in the country.
There are approximately 383 AM and 659 FM radio stations and 297 television and 873 cable television stations.[187] Estimates for internet penetration in the Philippines vary widely ranging from a low of 2.5 million to a high of 24 million people.[188][189] Social networking and watching videos are among the most frequent internet activities.[190][191]
